Discovery, FINAS Launch Search for Malaysian Filmmakers

KUALA LUMPUR, November 20:
Discovery Networks Asia is partnering with the National Film Development
Corporation (FINAS) and the Ministry of Culture, Arts & Heritage of
Malaysia to commission FTFM Malaysia, an initiative designed to showcase the
talents of up-and-coming Malaysian filmmakers.

FTFM’s mission is to
provide Malaysian filmmakers with the opportunity to receive hands-on training
and professional development from Discovery Channel producers, to showcase
their talent, and to help them gain international recognition. It is expected
that the initiative will result in five half-hour films that will premiere on
Discovery channel next year to commemorate 50 years of Malaysian nationhood, as
seen through the eyes of the young country’s people.

“The First Time Filmmakers
initiative is an excellent platform for promising filmmakers to showcase their
talents to a global audience on Discovery Channel,” said James Gibbons, senior
VP, Discovery Networks Asia. “It is designed to provide local filmmakers with
their international break and provide an avenue for them to tell their stories
about their country to the world.”

“First Time Filmmakers
Malaysia is an important part of our ongoing efforts to support the growth of
documentary filmmakers in our production community and industry,” added Encik
Mohd Mahyiddin Mustakim, FINAS director general. “Our partnership with an
internationally renowned media company like Discovery Channel is a strategic
one, chosen to develop the best talents and production values in line with our
objective to taking the Malaysian film industry successfully into the global
arena.”

Interested applicants are
