Current Affairs & News Nominees Announced for International Emmys

NEW YORK: The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has revealed the nominees for the 2013 current affairs and news categories, the winners of which will be announced on October 1.

The eight nominees are from Brazil, Germany, Romania, the Philippines and the U.K. The winners will be announced at a ceremony at the Fredrick P. Rose Hall of Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York. The international winners will be recognized alongside their U.S. news and documentary counterparts.

In the current affairs category, the nominees are Banaz: An Honour Killing from the U.K., Globo Reporter: Enawenê-nawê, The Spirit-Men from TV Globo in Brazil, I-Witness: Alkansiya (Piggy Bank) from GMA Network in the Philippines and ZDFzoom: The Fukushima Lie from Germany’s ZDF.

Up for the International Emmy in the news category are 24 Oras (24 Hours): Typhoon Pablo from GMA Network in the Philippines, Channel 4 News: The Battle for Homs from the U.K., Jornal Nacional: Collapse in Rio from Brazil’s TV Globo and ProTV News: Romania Buried in Snow from Romania.

“The 2013 Nominees reported on subjects ranging from war to politics to human triumph and tragedy,” said Bruce L. Paisner, the president and CEO of the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. “One of the programs pays tribute to Marie Colvin and Remi Ochlik, who died during the war in Syria, and we join in honoring their memory and in recognizing the courage of so many journalists who brave danger on a daily basis.”
