SAN FRANCISCO/PHILADELPHIA: The new Xfinity TV app from Comcast will serve as a TV guide and mobile video player that can be accessed directly on the iPad.

The app, which was demonstrated at the Web 2.0 conference in San Francisco, is free to Comcast digital customers. The first version will be available on the iTunes Store this week. It can be used as a TV guide, with users able to find what to watch by reviewing their TV listings and can also change the channel in real time. The app can also be used to program at-home DVRs to schedule recordings. Other features to come soon include personalized viewing with a MyTV service that creates a Watchlist of favorite programming and the ability the access social networking sites to share what they’re watching with others.

“This Xfinity TV app is part of a much larger effort to reinvent the way consumers interact with their televisions by transforming the way they search, navigate, discover and share entertainment,” said Neil Smith, the president of Comcast Cable. “The remote control hasn’t changed in years and this app will enable millions of consumers to instantly search thousands of live TV and On Demand choices and also watch the best content whenever and wherever they want.”
