Berlinale 2024 Condenses Festival Structure

Several changes have been made to the program structure for the 2024 edition of Berlinale, including dissolving Perspektive Deutsches Kino as a separate section and discontinuing Berlinale Series as an independent program.

While Perspektive Deutsches Kino will no longer be its own section, films by German newcomers will be presented in the existing sections Competition, Encounters, Panorama, Generation or Forum. The integration aims to increase international visibility for debut and sophomore films produced in Germany.

Berlinale Series will be discontinued as an independent program, but 2024 audiences will be able to see selected series formats as part of Berlinale Special Gala. The intent of this change is to push outstanding series further into the limelight. Carlo Chatrian, artistic director of Berlinale, will be responsible for the selection, with support from his selection committee.

The series formats for professionals will remain unchanged. The Berlinale Series Market will continue to take place parallel to the public film program. In addition to the regular market infrastructure, its program components are the conference program, the Berlinale Series Market Selects presentation and international showcases. The pitch and networking event Co-Pro Series will still bring together selected series projects with potential co-production partners.

The Berlinale Series Market is a joint initiative by the European Film Market (EFM), the Berlinale Co-Production Market and Berlinale Talents, with long-standing support from main partner Film- und Medienstiftung NRW. The Berlinale Series Market is funded by Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg.

The 2024 edition of the Berlin International Film Festival will be taking place from February 15 to 25, 2024. Information on film submissions will be available online beginning in mid-September.
