BBC Releases New Version of iPlayer for TV

LONDON: The BBC has unveiled an updated version of its iPlayer designed for televisions, launching initially on Sony’s PlayStation 3 console.

The revamped BBC iPlayer features a TV-friendly design that has been simplified to make using the service just as easy as flipping through channels. The custom-built design also includes an improved search function to help users find programs, access "favorites" and recommendations. It has also been updated for better personalization features, allowing users to choose favorite programs, view previous search results and go back to the last program watched.

The BBC iPlayer is now available on more than 300 different connected TV devices. The new version launches first for the PS3 console, with a number of other screens and devices to be added in the coming months.

Daniel Danker, BBC’s general manager for programs and on demand, said: "BBC iPlayer has been tremendously successful. With today’s announcement, we’re transforming iPlayer in its most natural home: right on the living room TV. By creating a product that’s as simple and intuitive as flicking through TV channels, the BBC is bringing on demand television to mainstream audiences across the U.K.

"Last week, Ofcom reported that 10 percent of TV sets sold in the U.K. are Internet ready. But BBC iPlayer is already available on over 300 connected TVs and blu-ray disc players, which has resulted in a five fold growth of iPlayer on TV over the last six months alone. At this rate of growth, in the next few years we could well see over half of iPlayer use directly on the living room TV."
