CBBC Expands Animation Portal

LONDON: CBBC is expanding its Cartoon Works online portal, positioning it as a destination to premiere short-form British animation.

The British kids’ channel launched its Cartoon Works portal in 2008. As of this fall, it will serve as a destination to showcase new short-form projects from budding, under 18-year-old animators through to established professionals. The best of the submissions will be featured on bbc.co.uk/cbbc and then broadcast on the channel in spring 2010.

CBBC has also announced the commission of a new animated series, Muddle Earth, based on the children’s books by Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell. It is set to air in the spring. The show is a CBBC production with animation by Hullabaloo Studios in Greater Manchester.

Steven Andrew, the head of drama, animation and acquisition for CBBC, called Muddle Earth a "mysterious and epic animated tale." Andrews added that Shaun the Sheep will be returning to the channel in November for a second season. "These new commissions are testament to the talented and creative community working in U.K. animation today, and the wonderful content that is being produced across the country."
