SCOTTSDALE: As 3D continues to make its way into the home, the number of 3D channels available on television is forecast to reach more than 100 by 2015, according to In-Stat.

In-Stat’s report, 3D TV Services: It’s a Small World, looks at the state of 3D content production and distribution, giving a five-year forecast. The study predicts that there will be more than 100 3D TV channels worldwide by 2015, including pay-TV VOD options, as will as linear channels. 3D TV channels have already launched in North America, Europe and Asia, with more planned for this year.

Coverage of live events in 3D is expected grow this year, but challenges remain. The areas primed for the most growth for 3D content include sports, movies, documentaries and music channels. In-Stat also predicts that as the costs to reproduce in 3D decline over time, 3D content production will grow more quickly.

“Pay-TV providers around the globe who have HD systems in place have jumped on the 3D content being made available to them at a faster rate than many had expected,” said Michelle Abraham, principal analyst at In-Stat. “Many took advantage of the World Cup 3D coverage to test transmission of 3D over their networks, and some of them have now launched transmission of regular 3D TV channels. The competitive nature of pay-TV ensures that once one pay-TV distributor in a country is offering 3D, the others need to be fast followers unless they want to lose their top-tier customers.”
