34th International Emmys Celebrate World’s TV Programs

NEW YORK, November 21: the
International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced the winners
of the 34th International Emmy Awards at a star-studded gala at the New York
Hilton, hosted by award-winning comedian and talk-show host Graham Norton.

U.K. programming rebounded
at the awards as Ray Winstone won Best Performance by an actor for his role as
Vincent in Granada’s Vincent. Maryam Hassouni from the Netherlands won Best Performance by an Actress for her role as Laila in
VARA’s Offers.

In addition to the Best
Actor category, British programs won in the Children & Young People,
Comedy, Documentary, Drama Series and Non-Scripted Entertainment categories.

A cast of international
stars, including Katie Couric, Susan Sarandon, Christiane Amanpour, Rosie
Perez, Roger Bart, Julianne Nicholson and Lorenzo Lamas presented the
International Emmy statue to the winners.
"We congratulate this year's winners for their outstanding achievement,”
said Academy president & CEO Bruce Paisner, also president of Hearst
Entertainment. “The Academy is proud to be the international television
community's platform for recognizing excellence in television programming
worldwide."
The International Emmy Founders Award was presented to Steven Spielberg, for
his outstanding television career, and The International Emmy Directorate Award
was presented to Central European Media Enterprises (CME) and its founder and
chairman Ronald S. Lauder for pioneering the development of independent
television broadcasting in Central and Eastern Europe.
Spielberg's career began in episodic television. His first directing job
was an episode of Night Gallery that starred Joan Crawford. He also
directed episodes of such series as Marcus Welby, M.D., The Name of the Game, and Columbo. His made-for-television movie Duel became a breakthrough for him when it was released
theatrically in the international market. That led to his first feature
films, which took off after Jaws.
Spielberg continued to be involved in television. In 1985, he created the
weekly anthology series Amazing Stories. His later projects include the series ER and the long-form productions Band of Brothers, Taken
and Into the West. He also
presented the acclaimed animated series Tiny Toon Adventures, Animaniacs, and Pinky & the Brain. Future projects include a long-form production about World War
II in the Pacific, which will be from the Band of Brothers team, the sci-fi long-form Nine Lives, plus On the Lot, an unscripted series that will allow aspiring
filmmakers to vie for a studio development deal at DreamWorks, which Spielberg
partially owns.
Lauder’s CME is a TV broadcasting company with networks in six Central and
Eastern European countries reaching approximately 82 million people. The
Company's television stations are located in Croatia (Nova TV), Czech Republic
(TV Nova, Galaxie Sport), Romania (PRO TV, Acasa, PRO Cinema), Slovakia
(Markíza), Slovenia (POP TV, Kanal A) and Ukraine (Studio 1+1, Studio 1+1 International,
Gravis).
The International Children's Day of Broadcasting (ICDB) Award was presented to
the winning broadcaster from Moldova, Teleradio Moldova, for its program Let's
Play
by UNICEF Ambassador Susan
Sarandon. This special Award is co-presented yearly by The International
Academy of Television Arts & Sciences and UNICEF.
The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences is the largest
organization of global broadcasters, with over 500 members from nearly 70
countries and over 500 companies. The Academy was chartered with a mission to
recognize excellence in television programming produced outside of the United
States. The Academy is an independent organization that includes international
television and media leaders who come together to exchange ideas, discuss
common issues and promote new strategies for the development of quality global
television programming. The winners:
