JOHANNESBURG/BURBANK: An estimated 14.9 million viewers tuned in to ABC on Saturday to watch the U.S. take on Ghana in the World Cup, with a further 4.5 million watching the match on Univision.

Ghana’s 2-1 victory in extra time, knocking the U.S. out of the competition, is the most-watched men’s World Cup game in U.S. broadcasting history, reports indicate. The only soccer match to out-rate Saturday’s event was the 1999 Women’s World Cup final, which averaged some 18 million viewers.

U.S. viewership of the World Cup has seen record gains this year. The U.S. taking on Algeria last week gave ESPN its highest ratings ever for a soccer match, delivering some 6.2 million viewers in its 10 a.m. to noon EST broadcast.
