NHK World-Japan, the 24-hour international English-language TV channel from Japan’s NHK, is set to show a two-part series on the devastating tsunami of March 11, 2011.

3/11—The Tsunami will explore how an M9 earthquake off the Pacific coast of Japan triggered a huge tsunami that flooded 650 kilometers of coastline, destroying cities and towns and claiming the lives of over 18,000 people. It features footage filmed at the center of the disaster, giving a first-hand look into people’s experiences on that day and the hardships they were faced in the aftermath.

The footage filmed in 2011 and 2012 by NHK and eyewitnesses in the affected areas was collected and edited together in chronological order to convey the impact of the disaster, which led to nuclear meltdowns at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant.

The first episode of 3/11—The Tsunami focuses on the initial three days, while episode two covers the first year after the disaster. Episode one airs on January 9, with the second episode rolling out on January 16.
