Programs from the U.K. and Turkey spotlighting the war in Ukraine have won International Emmys.

The 2023 International Emmy for the news category was presented to The Battle for Bucha & Irpin, produced by Sky News (U.K.). This coverage depicts the start of the brutal battles for Bucha and Irpin on March 5 of last year, when Russian troops attempted to surround Kyiv.

The International Emmy for the current affairs category was presented to Ukraine Wartime Diaries, produced by TRT World/Off The Grid (Turkey). Under the laws of war, civilians should be protected; in Ukraine, it looks like they were targeted. As Russian troops withdraw, the brutality of their occupation is revealed in this report.

This is the first time a current affairs program from Turkey has won an Emmy.

“The International Emmy gives us an opportunity to recognize the courageous and important work that journalists do every day in war zones, despite the grave risks involved,” said Bruce Paisner, president and CEO of the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.
