Pernel Media has been commissioned by the French public broadcaster France 5 to produce a fourth season of the docudrama series The Real War of Thrones: A History of Europe.

The French-Canadian production company Idéacom International has joined as a co-production partner under the official France-Canadian co-production treaty for the new six-part season, which will air on TV5 Quebec Canada. The series will return to France 5 in a prime-time slot later this year, with Histoire TV also pre-acquiring cable and satellite rights.

The new season of The Real War of Thrones: A History of Europe will focus on Louis XIV and his 70-year-long reign that started in blood during the rebellion known as “la Fronde.” It follows on as he turns France into the most powerful country in Europe and expands its territories in America and Canada—while also becoming the most-hated monarch in Europe.

The third season of The Real War of Thrones: A History of Europe has been sold to broadcasters in more than 35 territories worldwide, including to Foxtel in Australia, Viasat World and ZDF in Germany.

Samuel Kissous, president of Pernel Media, said: “This is the most ambitious installment of The Real War of Thrones; A History of Europe to date, our high-end factual extravaganza that documents a magnificent period of French history: the reign of Louis XIV, whose exploits are known around the world. We are delighted Ideacom International has come on board as a co-production partner and we’re in no doubt this will be another successful series for France Télévisions as we continue to build on the show’s global success.”
