France Télévisions Group has commissioned Pernel Media to produce the documentary special Lost City of Ramses the Great.

The special will document the excavation of a 3,000-year-old lost city founded by the Egyptian pharaoh Ramses. It will feature exclusive access to a new expedition led by German archaeologist Henning Franzmeier at the site of Pi-Ramesses.

In Lost City of Ramses the Great, Henning and his team will use their existing scan images of the site to track down key features of the lost city, for which ruins suggest it was larger than any other Egyptian city of its time. At the Pi-Ramesses site, the film will follow the excavation team as it analyzes scanning readings, excavates the palace grounds, digitally reconstructs the town and its main features, investigates the cemetery and analyzes new and old discoveries.

The two-hour special is directed by Laurent Portes (In the Footsteps of Attila the Hun).

Samuel Kissous, president of Pernel Media, said: “After the global success of our archeology specials Attila the Hun and Trojan War, we are very excited to triple down on our expertise in archeological expeditions with exclusive access.”
