The global sports streaming service DAZN is releasing the documentary film Maradona: The Fall on the platform.

A DAZN Originals film directed by Emmy Award winner Angus Macqueen, the doc explores the story behind footballer Diego Maradona and how he was sensationally thrown out of the USA FIFA World Cup after failing a post-match drug test.

It draws on candid interviews and has exclusive access to the characters at the center of the drama—from former FIFA General Secretary Sepp Blatter and Maradona’s teammates Gabriel Batistuta and Claudio Caniggia to his management and medical team.

The documentary is available on DAZN in key markets, including the U.K., DACH, Spain, Italy and Japan, from November 11.

Macqueen said: “The image of Diego Maradona running like a maniac to the camera during the World Cup at USA94 is iconic: a flawed genius, a man purporting to be back to his best, but seemingly totally out of control, wracked by demons and high on drugs. A legend about to fall. Maradona: The Fall challenges the established narrative—as always with Maradona, what you think you see is not always the full picture.”

Producer Grant Best said: “Maradona: The Fall, a DAZN Originals production, is the tale of how the footballing legend Diego Armando Maradona came to play at the World Cup ‘94 for his beloved Argentina. Both FIFA and the host country, U.S.A., hoped the greatest football player of his generation would play at their tournament, and this incredible story is released on selected DAZN platforms around the world ahead of the 2022 World Cup.”
