Smithsonian Channel will premiere Humboldt: Epic Explorer, a docu-drama that follows Alexander von Humboldt’s journey across South America, in Latin America later this year.

The one-hour event program will take viewers from Humboldt’s childhood near Berlin, Germany, through his expedition that brought him from the Orinoco River to the Andes Mountains and inspired numerous scientific discoveries. Historian and author Andrea Wulf (The Invention of Nature) hosts.

Humboldt: Epic Explorer is produced by Spiegel TV for Smithsonian Networks, ZDF and ZDF Enterprises in association with Arte.

David Royle, chief programming officer for Smithsonian Channel, said: “Since launching Smithsonian Channel DirecTV in Latin America in 2018, we have made a major commitment to programs that tell the extraordinary story of the continent. Humboldt’s five-year expedition was truly epic and transformed the world’s knowledge of the continent.”
