Dogwoof Takes Global Distribution Rights for JT LeRoy Film

LONDON/NEW YORK: Dogwoof has secured international rights (excluding North America) for the film Author: The JT LeRoy Story from A&E IndieFilms and RatPac Documentary Films.

From director Jeff Feuerzeig (The Devil and Daniel Johnston), Author: The JT LeRoy Story made its world premiere at Sundance Film Festival. A theatrical release of the film is slated for this year in the U.K. The title examines how American author Laura Albert, a punk rocker and phone-sex worker, managed to create the persona of JT LeRoy and fool the world for a decade. Publishing under the pseudonym JT LeRoy in the 1990s, Albert stormed the literary scene, and her true identity was finally revealed in a New York Magazine exposé in 2005.

JT LeRoy is a stranger-than-fiction story which will shock and entertain international audiences,” said Anna Godas, CEO and co-founder of Dogwoof. “It’s fabulously crafted by Jeff and we really can’t wait to start working on it.”

“Dogwoof is the cat’s pajamas, and we’re happy to work with them again on Author following our success on Cartel Land,” said Molly Thompson, the senior VP of A&E IndieFilms.

“Following the tremendous reception at Sundance and anticipating what we know will be a high-profile release in the U.S., we wanted a partner who could carry our belief in the film across the world,” added producer Brett Ratner of RatPac Entertainment. “Dogwoof shares our passion and delivers a track record of success with prestigious commercial documentaries like this one.”

The film was produced by A&E IndieFilms, RatPac Documentary Films in association with Complex Corporation and VICE. Feuerzeig, Danny Gabai, Jim Czarnecki, Thompson and Ratner served as producers. Executive producers on the project are Robert Sharenow, Robert DeBitetto, James Packer, Marie Therese Guirgis, Eddy Moretti, Shane Smith and Henry S. Rosenthal. Amazon Studios holds U.S. theatrical and SVOD rights to Author: The JT LeRoy Story.
