Discovery Channel Slates Sting-Narrated Film About the Sun

SILVER SPRING: As part of its Science Channel Weekend schedule, Discovery Channel has lined up the film The Dark Side of the Sun, which is narrated by Sting and explores the potentially harmful effects of Earth’s brightest star.

Premiering as the centerpiece of Science Channel Weekend on Discovery Channel on February 11 at 10 p.m. and airing on Science Channel the next day at 9 p.m., The Dark Side of the Sun tells the story of the sun, its crucial importance to life on Earth, and the potential harm it can have on modern civilization, since coronal mass ejections from the sun could knock out our electrical power grid. The film features scientists and engineers from NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA). It offers unprecedented access to two cutting-edge projects that will help solve the sun’s mysteries.

The Dark Side of the Sun highlights the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST), which will help view the sun in never-before-seen detail. The largest solar telescope in history, DKIST is currently under construction and is expected to be completed next year. Also under construction and featured in the film is NASA’s Solar Probe Plus, a spacecraft designed to fly to the sun and unlock the secrets of the corona, the hazy cloud that surrounds the sun.

The program is narrated by singer-songwriter and activist Sting and is directed by Nathaniel Kahn (My Architect, Two Hands) and award-winning filmmaker Paul Bozymowski (Generation Astronaut, Sting: When the Last Sails). It is produced by RadicalMedia.
