LONDON: Charles Murito, formerly the director of business development for Africa and the Middle East at Turner Broadcasting Europe, has been appointed to the newly created role of chief commercial officer of Wananchi Programming.

The new hire comes as part of Zuku's efforts to monetize its assets and gear up for future growth. Murito will be overseeing all revenue generation through Zuku-branded channel distribution, content sales, sponsorship and promotions as well as licensing and merchandising.

Hannelie Bekker, the managing director of Wananchi Programming, said: “Zuku is at a very exciting time in its commercial development and Charles’s wealth of industry knowledge and track record of commercial success will help take our growth to the next level. It is his international experience combined with local sensibilities that allows Charles to really understand Zuku’s goals and future ambitions. We feel gratified that he has chosen to bring his expertise to Zuku and our Kenyan team welcomes him wholeheartedly.”

Murito added: “The decision to join Zuku was an easy one to make. Zuku has experienced an enormous success by aligning the creative with the commercial. I myself am passionate about content, particularly content that is underwritten by commercial viability. Zuku’s platform and programming promise not only a depth of opportunity unrivalled in the industry but they are having a significant socio-cultural impact on local communities in Africa and this is something I definitely want to be part of.”
