PBS KIDS has unveiled the new preschool comedy series Rosie’s Rules, from 9 Story Media Group and its Brown Bag Films studio.

The new series, set to debut on PBS KIDS in fall 2022, centers on Rosie Fuentes, a young girl growing up in a blended, multicultural family in Texas. Rosie’s Rules aims to teach children through a social studies framework about how a community works, helping them develop an awareness about themselves as individuals and as part of a broader society.

Rosie’s family includes her father from Mexico City, her mother from rural Wisconsin, her little brother Iggy and her older sister Crystal, from her mother’s first marriage. Rosie’s multicultural identity is a key piece of the series, and Mexican, Southwestern and Midwestern art, traditions, food and music are featured.

Each episode builds on a preschooler’s budding understanding of a concept such as how the mail works, transportation and family relationships and extends the learning from there. As Rosie figures things out, the answers become Rosie’s rules (e.g., “Don’t try to mail your cat to Mexico”).

“Preschool is that amazing stage when children start noticing the mechanisms of how a community operates, and naturally, they have a lot of questions,” said Sara DeWitt, senior VP and general manager of children’s media and education at PBS. “Rosie is right there with them, figuring things out one ‘rule’ at a time through humor and play.”

“We are so excited for kids to meet Rosie,” added Angela Santomero, chief creative officer for 9 Story Media Group. “Like many preschoolers, Rosie is just beginning to learn about the world around her. Our hope is that kids will see themselves in the Fuentes family and fall in love with Rosie’s curiosity, determination, creative thinking and humor!”

Rosie’s Rules was created by Emmy Award-winning writer and children’s book author Jennifer Hamburg, whose credits include Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, Super Why!, Pinkalicious & Peterrrific, Cyberchase and Doc McStuffins. Hamburg is executive producing, alongside Mariana Diaz-Wionczek (Dora the Explorer, Go Diego Go!, Santiago of the Seas), who brings cultural, educational and linguistic expertise. Maria Escobedo (Grey’s Anatomy, Elena of Avalor, Nina’s World) is story editor.
