Malaysian animation content developer Monsta has inked acquisition deals for BoBoiBoy with China’s Tencent Video and Disney Channel in India.

Under the exclusive acquisition deal with Tencent, all three seasons of the 3D animated series and the feature film, BoBoiBoy The Movie, will be fully dubbed into Mandarin. Disney Channel India will broadcast the BoBoiBoy series and movie to the Indian sub-continent, which includes Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Seychelles and Sri Lanka.

Through the deal with Disney Channel India, BoBoiBoy will be shown in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and English. WebTVAsia acted as BoBoiBoy’s distribution and localization partner. The studio revealed the deals at a press conference at Komune, Bangsar South City, with the support of Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) and WebTVAsia.

Monsta also secured a merchandising deal with Japan’s Takara Tomy to produce the BoBoiBoy Galaxy TOMICA toy line, which was released to the Malaysian market this year. Additionally, the company partnered with Gameloft to produce BoBoiBoy Galaxy Run, a mobile game for both Android and iOS.

Fred Chong, group CEO of WebTVAsia, said, “It is a major breakthrough for a top Malaysian animation IP to enter China, one of the world’s biggest markets, with a highly popular video platform like Tencent. As a Malaysian company ourselves, we are proud to bridge this connection and look forward to a successful partnership in years to come.”

Datuk Yasmin Mahmood, the CEO of MDEC, commented, “At MDEC, we see the development of Malaysian animation production capabilities as one of our key priorities. It gives me great pleasure to see local studios expanding worldwide because it reflects to the world that the Malaysia Boleh spirit is true. We hope these announcements and partnerships will spur the Malaysian animation and visual production industry to limitless triumphs, and MDEC will always be here to support them.”

Nizam Razak, CEO of Monsta, added, “It has always been our dream to export not only our content but also our Malaysian culture to the world. Now this dream is a reality as millions of viewers from across the world are enjoying our animated shows with our Malaysian identity.”
