Seven Network has ordered a third season of the BES Animation-produced children’s comedy series Kitty is Not a Cat.

Aimed at 6- to 10-year-olds, the show’s first season is currently airing around the world, with season two slated for release in November. The third season, which is to have an increased focus on music, is set to begin production later this year.

Kitty is Not a Cat follows the adventures of a young girl determined to live life as a cat and a motley crew of felines who attempt to convince her otherwise. BES has aligned with Jetpack Distribution to expand on the 90-plus territories that currently broadcast the series, which will launch its own book series with Hachette Publishing in the New Year, with licensing and merchandise partnerships to follow.

Bruce Kane, co-creator and director at BES Animation, said: “We set out to create a gentle comedy that deconstructed the way kids are expected to behave and the conventions we consider to be normal human behavior but when viewed from another angle can appear quite absurd. As any parent knows, kids zero in on this and hopefully the bumbling innocence of our cats attempting to explain what they don’t understand continues to strike a chord for children and adults alike. I suppose our success or otherwise in explaining human behavior might be judged by the number of kids around the world masquerading as cats!”

Co-creator Maurice Argiro added: “We are thrilled to see the show resonating with kids around the world and I’ve got to admit, I’m relieved that a story about cats who talk and a little girl who meows can find a home across so many cultures. I’m not sure what this says about people in general—perhaps cats might know the answer, but sadly in the real world, I can’t understand a thing they say.”

Niki Hamilton, executive producer at Seven Network, said: “Kitty and her feline friends are more than delightful, they make us belly laugh and that’s why this wonderful series resonates with children and adults alike. We are so proud of how BES and the team have brought this series to life and are thrilled to be partnering with them for season three.”
