Headspinner Productions has optioned the rights to the classic Canadian series The Hilarious House of Frightenstein.

The reboot, aimed at kids 8 to 14 and their families, will follow the exploits of the descendants of the original characters as a sketch comedy-sitcom hybrid. The new plot will see the House of Frightenstein opened up to the public to help pay the bills. The original The Hilarious House of Frightenstein was produced in 1971 by brothers Riff and Mitch Markowitz.

The series went on to be one of the longest-running children’s shows. The original aired on CHCH, YTV, Showcase, Space and Drive In Classics in Canada. The series also aired throughout the U.S. and across Europe.

Headspinner principals Michelle Melanson (The Next Step, Fangbone!) and Ken Cuperus (Stargate: Atlantis, The Stanley Dynamic) will develop and produce the series alongside creative partner Sandy Jobin-Bevans (Just Like Mom and Dad, Second City Mainstage). Also on board as executive producer is original series producer and actor Mitch Markowitz.

Also in development is The Happy House of Frightenstein, an animated preschool edition of the show featuring young versions of the original characters, as they learn and grow together in the castle of fun. A special celebrating the show’s 50th anniversary is also in the works. Headspinner is currently seeking broadcast and distribution partners on these projects.

Hilarious House of Frightenstein was a major influence on our comic sensibilities,” said Headspinner’s Cuperus.

“It’s a dream come true to bring these incredible characters back and introduce them to a whole new generation of fans,” added Headspinner’s Jobin-Bevans.

“I am convinced this is the right team and the right time to revitalize and reinvent ‘The Green Team’ a.k.a. The Hilarious House of Frightenstein!” Markowitz remarked.
