TORONTO: Industrial Brothers, CBC and The Jim Henson Company have unveiled Dotopedia, a new app based on the animated series Dot., about a curious girl who uses technology to enhance her experiences with the natural world.

Dotopedia gives kids the opportunity to explore subjects they are passionate about and create their own digital encyclopedia just like Dot’s. Kids help build Dotopedia into a digital repository of their favorite information by uploading their own pictures, audio clips and stories. Dot., a series for kids between the ages of 4 and 7, is based on the picture book by New York Times best-selling author Randi Zuckerberg.

The app was developed by digital design and development studio REDspace in conjunction with Industrial Brothers, CBC, The Jim Henson Company and The Bell Fund. With the app, kids can access more than 200 articles through games and activities. They can also track their progress and earn stickers and Rangeroo Badges while they play, and unlock new articles by completing activities. The app also allows kids to create new articles by adding text, images and sound. There is no social sharing or connectivity, in an effort to create a safe environment for kids. Dotopedia is available for iOS and Android devices.

Dot. is produced by Industrial Brothers in association with The Jim Henson Company and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). The show airs on Kids’ CBC in Canada and Sprout in the U.S.

Dotopedia was created to inspire and instill a sense of media literacy in modern-day kids,” said Tammy Semen, the VP of production at Industrial Brothers. “By responsibly connecting the digital world to the natural one, Dotopedia demonstrates that neither world exists agnostically of the other, and that their integration can be simple, useful and best of all, fun.”
