BURBANK: Starting in May, DC Entertainment is slated to release a new line of comics based on a number of popular Hanna-Barbera characters.

The initial collection includes The Flintstones, based on the modern Stone Age characters of Fred, Wilma, Barney, Betty and Bamm-Bamm. The title will feature character designs by Amanda Conner and is penned by Mark Russell. There is also Scooby Apocalypse, with artist Howard Porter’s unique interpretations of Freddie, Velma, Daphne, Shaggy and Scooby-Doo. That one features character designs by Jim Lee and an origin story by Lee and Keith Giffen.

Additional comics are Future Quest (with writer Jeff Parker and artist Evan “Doc” Shaner), featuring the new adventures of heroic teen Jonny Quest and his sidekick, Hadji, and Wacky Raceland (written by Ken Pontac and illustrated by Leonardo Manco, with vehicle designs by Mark Sexton), which sees the Wacky Racers compete for survival during a planetary Armageddon.

“I can’t think of anyone that doesn’t look back at these characters with anything but fond memories,” said Dan DiDio, DC Entertainment’s co-publisher. “With this initial lineup of titles and talent, we’re excited for fans to experience the reimagining of these Saturday morning classics with a more modern and contemporary look and feel.”
