Andy Brereton has been hired as Channel 4’s new senior commissioning editor for comedy.

Brereton will report into Charlie Perkins, Channel 4’s newly appointed head of comedy, and joins a team that includes Commissioning Editor Laura Riseam and Commissioning Executive Joe Hullait. He comes to Channel 4 from Shiny Button Productions, a company he established with Tom Davis and James De Frond, where he was co-managing director.

Brereton joins Channel 4 later this year.

Perkins said: “Andy’s a triple threat, and I’m thrilled to have him joining our team. He brings with him an incredible track record for conceiving, marshaling and delivering inventive shows that push the boundaries of scripted comedy. He’s passionate about comedy in all its guises, and he’s a good and kind person who I’m really looking forward to working with.”

Brereton said: “I am delighted to be moving to Channel 4. Charlie is someone who has comedy in her heart and soul. She thinks differently, and I was thrilled when she asked me to join her team. From Phoenix Nights to We Are Lady Parts, Channel 4 has always been the place to make unique comedy for everyone. It has nurtured comedy talent, both in front and behind the camera, and I can’t wait to get started in doing the same. I have loved every minute at Shiny Button with Tom and James, forging a great place to work for creative people. Growing ideas, talent and vision. I plan to use these skills to support our amazing indie community in producing their best ideas, and help shape Charlie’s new vision for Channel 4 Comedy.”
