Hartswood Films has tapped Doctor Who EP Brian Minchin to head up drama development at the company’s Cardiff production base, Hartswood West, starting in September.

Minchin has served as executive producer on Doctor Who since 2013, alongside Hartswood’s Steven Moffat. He has also developed a range of dramas for BBC Wales. Minchin has been executive producer and producer on such shows as Russell T Davies’ Midsummer Night’s Dream, Being Human, The Game and The Sarah Jane Adventures.

Hartswood’s recent drama productions include Jekyll, Me & Mrs Jones, The Guilty and the global hit Sherlock, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman.

Sue Vertue, producer and board director at Hartswood, said: “Brian’s brilliance and enthusiasm were evident throughout his years at the BBC, and we are delighted that he is joining us at Hartswood Films to develop drama out of our Cardiff office. Hartswood Films established a base in Cardiff in 2010 and we have already produced a number of high-profile productions there. Brian’s addition to the team will help nurture the growing number of quality dramas being produced in Wales.”

Moffat, board director at Hartswood, said: “I’ve worked very closely with Brian for the last four years, on Doctor Who, and he’s a brilliant and creative producer and a good friend. Now that I’m leaving Who to concentrate on Hartswood projects, I couldn’t be more delighted that Brian is doing the same.”

Minchin commented: “I’m thrilled to be joining Hartswood and very excited about being part of the future plans of such a brilliant company. I couldn’t hope to find a more talented team of producers. Having been part of so many great shows made in Wales, I’m especially pleased to be heading up the Cardiff office of Hartswood West and continuing to build on the success of drama in Wales.”
