NEW YORK: Spike has greenlit a production pilot from Dimension Television based on the classic Stephen King novella The Mist.

The Mist tells a story about a seemingly innocuous mist that seeps into a small town and creates immense havoc. Christian Torpe is serving as executive producer on the project. Torpe created the successful Danish show Rita, which is now finishing its fourth season, and has developed programming for both Showtime and AMC.

This will be the first production pilot for a Spike scripted dramatic series since the network’s shift toward more general entertainment. Spike TV debuted its first scripted event series in eight years, Tut, last July to strong ratings. The network recently ordered to series Red Mars, based on Kim Stanley Robinson’s Mars Trilogy.

“We are thrilled to join forces with the incredibly creative Christian Torpe and Dimension Films to develop Stephen King’s enthralling novella to a compelling series unlike anything else on television,” said Sharon Levy, the executive VP of original series at Spike.

“We are excited to be in business with Spike on their first scripted production pilot and working with the very talented Christian Torpe to further explore Stephen King’s classic novella and bring this riveting series to television audiences,” said Bob Weinstein, co-chariman of The Weinstein Company.
