The African streaming service Showmax and France’s Canal+ are co-producing the action drama Spinners, which has started filming this week in Cape Town, South Africa.

The 8×50-minute series is a Canal+ Original. The story centers on the popular and dangerous South African motor sport of Spinning, which sees cars driven at high speed with drivers performing stunts in and out of the vehicle.

Produced by Joachim Landau and Raphaël Rocher for Empreinte Digitale and co-produced by Ramadan Suleman (Zulu Love Letter, Fools), Spinners’ local co-production company is Natives at Large.

The English/Kaaps/Afrikaans drama is directed by Jaco Bouwer (Gaia, 4 Mure) and produced and co-created by Landau. Showrunner and co-creator Benjamin Hoffman is joined by writers Matthew Jankes, Sean Steinberg, Gillian Breslin, Daniel Zimbler, Byron Abrahams and Zoë Laband.

DJ Ready D, the South African hip-hop legend (co-founder and member of Prophets of the City) and Cape Town-based artist, is the music supervisor who is also composing tracks for the series.
