Shailene Woodley is set to star in Three Women, Showtime’s adaptation of the nonfiction bestseller by Lisa Taddeo.

Taddeo is a writer and executive producer on the drama, which Showtime picked up straight to series. Laura Eason is showrunner and Louise Friedberg has signed on to direct the first two episodes, which she will also executive produce.

The drama tells the stories of three women seeking to overhaul their lives: Lina, a suburban homemaker who embarks on an affair; Sloane, a glamorous entrepreneur in a committed open marriage that is threatened by the arrival of two strangers; and North Dakota student Maggie, who accuses her married English teacher of an inappropriate relationship. Woodley plays the role of Gia, a writer grieving the loss of her family who convinces these three women to share their stories with her.

“Shailene Woodley is an undeniable powerhouse who never fails to give an unflinchingly honest performance,” said Amy Israel, executive VP of scripted programming at Showtime Networks. “We are beyond thrilled that she will be at the forefront of this electrifying show. Three Women promises to be a riveting and immersive exploration of female desire, told by women in charge of their own narratives. Lisa Taddeo and Laura Eason’s adaptation crackles with emotion and edge and, coupled with Louise Friedberg’s exceptional direction, this Showtime series promises to be everyone’s next obsession.”
