NBCUniversal Television and Streaming has given a straight-to-series order for UCP’s adaptation of Joe Exotic (wt), starring and executive produced by Saturday Night Live’s Kate McKinnon.

Based on the Wondery Podcast of the same name, Joe Exotic is a limited series based on true events that were also captured in the Netflix docuseries Tiger King. Following the big cat enthusiast Carole Baskin (McKinnon), the new scripted series sees her uncover that fellow exotic animal lover Joe “Exotic” Schreibvogel is breeding and using his big cats for profit—and subsequently set out to shut down his venture. As it turns out, Carole has a checkered past of her own, and Joe will stop at nothing to expose what he sees as her hypocrisy.

Etan Frankel is set to pen the limited series via his overall deal with UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group. The project is slated to roll out across NBCU’s scripted entertainment platforms—NBC, Peacock and USA. McKinnon is executive producing along with Wondery’s Hernan Lopez, Marshall Lewy and Aaron Hart.
