Adding to its slate of Welsh drama, all3media international has picked up the global sales rights for Pili Pala, which will be known internationally as Butterfly Breath.

Pili Pala is the story of three women—Sara, a fetal consultant; Elin, pregnant with her first baby; and Avril, a midwife—and the life-changing repercussions of a decision that goes against the recommended medical procedure. Sian Reese Williams (Craith/Hidden, Requiem, Y Gwyll/Hinterland) plays Sara, alongside Fflur Medi Owen (Darren Drws Nesa) as Elin and Catrin Mara (Parch) as Avril.

Produced by Wales-based scripted specialist Triongl, the series is set to premiere on S4C later this month.

Executive producer Gethin Scourfield commented: “Pili Pala centers on four friends who face an unimaginable situation—exploring the emotional, ethical and professional dilemmas behind a decision that will reverberate through their lives forever. Set against the stunning beauty and faded glory of the North East coast of Wales, the drama allows us to hear from a diversity of voices, all within the melting pot that is this busy NHS maternity ward. I’m looking forward to working alongside the fantastic team at all3media international once again as we showcase another exceptional Welsh drama to a worldwide audience.”

Amanda Rees, director of content at S4C, added: “Sinuous characters who face heart-breaking decisions and brilliant actors who deliver heart-stopping performances—these are the things that make Pili Pala the latest ‘unmissable’ drama from S4C. An unapologetically brave commission about the kind of moral dilemmas that can tear us all apart, it’s yet another evolution of the S4C originals brand. We are delighted that all3media international has seen and seized the opportunity to showcase yet more Welsh creative talent on the international stage.”
