Courtney A. Kemp, creator of STARZ’s Power Universe, is bringing the new crime drama Nemesis to Netflix.
Co-created with Tani Marole and starring Matthew Law and Y’lan Noel, Nemesis is the first series in a new creative partnership between Kemp and Netflix. “Tani and I are excited to bring a hard-hitting psychological crime drama to Netflix, specific in location but broad in universal themes of right and wrong, love and loss, and loyalty versus self-preservation,” Kemp said.
Nemesis is the story of two men on different sides of the law, exploring what happens when an unstoppable force (an expert criminal) meets an immovable object (a brilliant police detective). What starts as a subversion of the heist genre, amped with life-or-death stakes, family dynamics and explosive action, becomes an exploration of what drives us, sustains us and ultimately destroys us.
“Viewers are in for a ride with Nemesis, Courtney and Tani’s bold take on the crime drama genre,” added Nne Ebong, VP of studio scripted series at Netflix. “Courtney’s shows have proven to dominate [the] culture and conversation, and it’s exciting to have this be the first project from our creative partnership.”
The first two episodes of the series will be directed by Mario Van Peebles (Baadasssss!, Outlaw Posse, Wu-Tang: An American Saga), who will also serve as an executive producer. Chris Selak and Philipp Barnett will also executive produce.
The cast features Law (Abbott Elementary, Ahsoka), Noel (Lady in the Lake, Insecure), Cleopatra Coleman (Black Rabbit, Clipped), Tre Hale (All American, Platonic), Domenick Lombardozzi (The Wire, Power, Tulsa King), Jonnie “Dumbfoundead” Park (Quiz Lady, Power, Raya and the Last Dragon) and Ariana Guerra (CSI: Vegas, Marvel’s Helstrom).
