The Spanish-language streaming service Pantaya, a Lionsgate and Hemisphere Media Group joint venture, has partnered with Dynamo for the drama-thriller series titled Cannabica.

Production is set to begin later this month on the series, which aims to take a look at the future of the cannabis industry from a different and modern perspective.

Cannabica centers on three young, intelligent and ambitious entrepreneurs who bet on the recently legalized medicinal cannabis market in Colombia. The new face of entrepreneurship in the country, with their names on everyone’s lips, the trio has a secret that haunts them—the company appears to be built on a fatal lie and one journalist, in particular, is determined to uncover the truth. The ten-episode series will star María Elisa Camargo, Carolina Gaitán, Juan Pablo Urrego and Sebastián Eslava. Cannabica was created by Natalia Echeverri, executive producer at Dynamo; and co-created with director Andrés Beltrán and screenwriter Esteban Orozco.

Mario Almeida, Pantaya VP of programming, development and acquisitions, said: “We are excited to be working with Dynamo, one of Latin America’s best scripted producers, on Cannabica. We know audiences are going to enjoy Cannabica the moment it launches, with its unique premise and what promises to be an A-list cast. This is smart premium storytelling baked to perfection.”

Andrés Calderón, CEO at Dynamo, said: “This first agreement with Pantaya and Sony Pictures Television reflects Dynamo’s strategy of making alliances with the best to continue generating high-quality content and creativity in our productions. Medicinal and recreational legalization in recent years has exploited interest in this type of fiction.

Echeverri added: “We are very excited to provide the public with a new perspective on cannabis culture.”
