NHK Sweeps Tokyo Drama Awards

NHK has picked up a raft of wins for its series at this year’s Tokyo Drama Awards, with Deaf Voice—A Sign-Language Interpreter in Court taking the grand prix for a single drama.

The title follows a sharp turn in the life of Arai Naoto, a child of deaf adults (CODA) who now works as a sign language interpreter. Series star Tsuyoshi Kusanagi also won the award for best actor in a leading role.

Shizuka Ishibashi took home the best actress in a leading role award for her work on NHK’s Swallows. For the same series, Yuki Uchida was named best actress for a supporting role.

More winners included Vivant (TBS Television), which took the grand prix prize for series drama. Ryuya Wakaba was named best supporting actor for his role in Unmet: A Neurosurgeon’s Diary (Kansai TV).
