LOS ANGELES: Justin Lin, the director behind the Fast and Furious franchise, is working with Machinima to bring back Knight Rider as a digital series.

The digital series is being produced with NBCUniversal, Machinima and Lin’s YouTube channel YOMYOMF. The original Knight Rider premiered in 1982 on NBC and starred David Hasselhoff as Michael Knight, a crime fighter who was aided by his high-tech, artificially intelligent car KITT. A 2017 release is tentatively slated.

Knight Rider is an iconic franchise whose concepts of artificial intelligence and autonomous vehicles were science fiction in the 1980s and are now science fact,” said Machinima’s CEO, Chad Gutstein. “Justin is one of the leading storytellers of his generation, and we couldn’t be more excited to work with him on re-invigorating Knight Rider for a new generation of fans.”

Lin is best known for his work on Better Luck Tomorrow, The Fast and the Furious 3–6 and Star Trek Beyond. Next he will direct Space Jam 2 and Hot Wheels.
