Globalgate Entertainment is partnering with U.K.-based indie Ascendant Fox and a consortium of production and distribution entities to create an English-language adaptation of the hit Japanese manga Reset Game.

The manga was created by Kanji Yoshikai for COMISMA and amassed some 7.8 million readers. The “high-concept” live-action adaptation’s pilot will be penned by Simon Allen (Tehran, Choose or Die), who will also serve as showrunner.

The teams behind the new show are billing it as a genre-bending thriller. It follows a group of multinational captives thrown into a survival maze called The Tower.

Globalgate was founded in 2017 by Clifford Werber, William Pfeiffer and Paul Presburger to produce and co-finance English and local-language films and series with a consortium of partners. They include Lionsgate in the U.S. and U.K., Televisa/Miercoles in Latin America, TF1 in France, Nordisk in Scandinavia, Rai in Italy, Tobis in Germany, Lotte in Korea, Rakuten in Japan, TME in Turkey and Belga Filmes in Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg.

“Kanji Yoshikai has created an extraordinary graphic world stocked with mystery, suspense, life, death, confinement, escape, discovery, friendship and hope and, with Ascendant Fox and COMISMA and in the capable hands of Simon Allen, Reset Game will translate to a must-see series for global audiences,” Globalgate said in a statement.

Bart Ruspoli at Ascendant Fox added: “The moment Hester Ruoff and I read Reset Game, we knew it had massive global potential. It’s a gripping, emotionally layered story that speaks to the world we live in today. With Simon Allen’s bold creative vision, and in partnership with Globalgate and COMISMA, we’re thrilled to bring this project to life and can’t wait for it to reach the worldwide audience it truly deserves.”

Allen stated, “Reset Game is a relentless genre masterclass packed with powerful character arcs, arresting cinematic imagery and mind-blowing set pieces. I feel so lucky to be working with the vibrant Ascendant Fox and the formidable team at Globalgate and COMISMA on such a unique yet universal story.”

Yoshikai said, ”When I was drawing Reset Game, I always envisioned it as live-action in my head. This was because I had firmly decided to create a live-action film and/or series, inspired by my Manga. My father worked as a movie theater illustrator, so film have been a part of my life since childhood. I can’t put into words how surprised and thrilled I was when I found out that Globalgate would be adapting it as live-action. I sincerely hope that the message I infused into Reset Game—compassion, humanity’s greatest weapon—will spread across the world and bring true peace!”
