Environmental Thriller Set for Global Rollout

Aruanas, a ten-part thriller intended to sound the alarm about the climate crisis, is set to roll out in more than 150 countries on July 2.

From Brazil’s Globo and Maria Farinha Films, the series focuses on three friends who set up an NGO to investigate the activities of a mining company operating in the Amazon rainforest. While fictional, the project is informed by research from 20 NGOs around the world. It was written and created by Estela Renner and Marcos Nisti, with the collaboration of Pedro Barros.

Greenpeace served as a technical collaborator on the project, which also received support from organizations such as Amnesty International, WWF, Global Witness, UN Environment, Rainforest Foundation and more. The series, subtitled in 11 different languages, will be made available on aruanas.tv, a platform powered by Vimeo, for $13. In Brazil, the series will stream on Globoplay, while Globo will also deliver a linear telecast of the first episode. The first episode will be made available on Globo’s international channels as well.
