Dynamic Television has acquired the worldwide distribution rights for the new drama thriller Beneath the Surface, from Letterbox Filmproduktion in co-production with ZDF.

Beneath the Surface is set in an island paradise, where four inseparable friends created the perfect life together, their children becoming like siblings and living carefree and protected in an environment based on trust and friendship. However, when one of the children disappears overboard during a sailing trip, suddenly nothing is what it seems and secrets come to light.

Beneath the Surface was filmed in Germany and Denmark and will premiere on ZDF in prime time from February 7. DR has pre-bought the series for Denmark.

Beneath the Surface is created, written and directed by Friedemann Fromm (Weissensee). Each episode follows the point of view of a different character that is trying to discover the truth about what really happened on one tragic night. The series stars Thure Lindhardt (The Bridge, Last Kingdom), Lene Marie Christensen (Legacy, Small Town Criminals), Jan Josef Liefers (Tatort, Arthur’s Law), Jakob Cedergren (The Sandhamn Murders, The Guilty) and Katharina Schüttler (Generation War, Dogs of Berlin).

Jan Bennemann, senior VP of acquisitions and co-productions, said: “Beneath the Surface is a unique and original approach to a dramatic and personal story. We were captivated by Friedemann’s vision of how ordinary characters are thrown into extraordinary circumstances because no one can escape their flaws.”

Dr. Simone Emmelius, ZDF’s head of international fiction, said: ”ZDF is very proud to be part of this extraordinary production.”

Michael Lehmann, CEO of Studio Hamburg Production Group and producer at Letterbox Filmproduktion, said: “We are pleased to present another extraordinary high-end series following Bad Banks. Beneath the Surface is a quite modern, thrilling family drama with elements of film noir with a high international potential.”
