Disney+ in Germany has acquired the historical drama Marie Antoinette, created and written by Deborah Davis (The Favourite), from Banijay Rights.

Produced by Banijay Studios France, CAPA Drama and Les Gens, the eight-parter tells the story of the avant-garde French queen who went from being a stubborn young princess to an independent feminist and fashion icon before falling victim to the French Revolution.

Filming for the series took place in several historical places, including Châteaux of Versailles, Vaux-le-Vicomte, Lésigny, Champs and Voisins. Emilia Schüle (Ku’damm 56/63) stars as Marie Antoinette, with Louis Cunningham (Bridgerton) as the Dauphin of France, Louis XVI.

Writing alongside Davis are Louise Ironside (The Split), Avril E. Russell (All on a Summer’s Day) and Chloë Moss (Run Sister Run). The series is directed by Pete Travis (Bloodlands) and Geoffrey Enthoven (Children of Love). A second season has been ordered by Canal+, with filming set to begin this fall.

“Set in the dazzling, complex and often dark world of Versailles, Marie Antoinette is a remarkable drama that chronicles the life of one of history’s most exceptional women,” said Veronique Verges, senior VP of German-speaking territories, Poland and Hungary at Banijay Rights. “We’re thrilled Disney+ has acquired this series for German audiences, as her story continues to gain traction worldwide.”
