BBC Studios and ZDF have renewed their long-term strategic partnership to co-produce and acquire scripted content.

The multiyear deal allows ZDF and BBC Studios to continue to co-produce titles, including a second season of A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder and a third season of The Chelsea Detective. The new agreement also extends ZDF’s first option on presales and acquisitions of BBC Studios titles that are available in Germany, such as Death in Paradise seasons 13 and 14.

The original partnership between the two companies was forged in 2019. Since then, they have collaborated on a range o titles across genres, including A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder, The Famous Five season one, Kidnapped: The Chloe Ayling Story and The Chelsea Detective.

The renewal agreement was brokered by BBC Studios and ZDF Studios on behalf of ZDF.

“The extension of this long-established co-production deal with ZDF underscores the close relationship we have continued to grow and our aligned editorial values,” said Janet Brown, president of global content sales at BBC Studios. “Strategic partnerships in the current climate are essential in order to produce the next big international hits, and the recommission of successful shows like A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder are only made possible with this vital backing. Coupled with a strong scripted pipeline, under this new partnership, we’ll be able to entertain audiences worldwide with even more ambitious and genre-defining shows.”

Jasmin Maeda, senior VP of international fiction co-productions and acquisitions at ZDF, added, “ZDF and BBC Studios are working together to deliver entertaining productions of the highest production standards. Since 2019, we have jointly delivered numerous successful and innovative projects. We are proud to renew and extend our trusted collaboration and hope to delight our viewers by continuing beloved series and launching exciting new programs.”
