Aussie Prison Drama Wentworth Set for Season Seven

Production has begun on a seventh season of the Australian drama series Wentworth, which is slated to premiere in 2019 on Foxtel’s showcase channel.

Wentworth, which debuted in 2013, is produced by FremantleMedia Australia. The show premieres in its sixth season on June 19 at 8:30 p.m. on showcase and will be available to stream on Foxtel Now.

Penny Win, Foxtel’s head of drama and Wentworth executive producer, said: “It’s hard to believe we are already rolling the cameras on season seven of Wentworth. It feels like only yesterday we were reintroducing Foxtel viewers to such iconic characters like Bea Smith and ‘The Freak’ Joan Ferguson. The way in which our audience, both locally and internationally, has embraced and connected with the show goes to prove that people will watch, embrace, love and continue to support quality Australian drama.

“The ongoing global success of Wentworth truly comes down to the inspired writing and the talented cast and crew who keep raising the bar every season, and to the legion of loyal fans who tell us how much they love it.”

Jo Porter, FremantleMedia Australia’s director of drama and Wentworth EP, said: “The recently announced addition of the brilliant Leah Purcell, Susie Porter and Rarriwuy Hick to our ensemble of exceptional cast speaks to the reputation Wentworth has maintained for attracting the best talent on and off screen. Fueling this is the bold and fearless storytelling of Marcia Gardner and her team of writers, who put complex female characters and their stories at the heart of our world.

“No one takes the ongoing passion and commitment of our incredible local and global audiences for granted. And I know the writers together with series producer Pino Amenta and our talented directors and crew are going to deliver another emotional and dramatic ride like no other.”
