The series will be adapted by Peter Straughan and directed by Tom Shankland, who also executive produces. The untitled drama was ordered by Apple TV and is based on Metropolis from Philip Kerr’s book series Berlin Noir. It hails from Bad Wolf and Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman’s PlayTone.

The Berlin Noir book series features detective Bernie Gunther, and this adaptation begins with Metropolis and his origin story in 1928. Bernie is a newly promoted police officer to the intimidating and elite Berlin Murder Squad, who must investigate what seems to be a serial killer targeting victims on the fringes of society.
