Amazon Set to Revamp The Boarding School

Amazon Prime Video is preparing a reboot of the Spanish drama series The Boarding School (El Internado), set to be titled El Internado: Las Cumbres.

The story in the series reboot will take place in a school located next to an old monastery in the mountains, isolated from the world. El Internado: Las Cumbres is an Atresmedia Studios and The Mediapro Studio co-production.

The students at the school are rebellious kids who live under a strict regime of discipline imposed by the center to reintegrate them into society. The surrounding forest is home to ancient legends, ever-present threats that will plunge the students into thrilling and terrifying adventures.

At the head of the production will be the creator of the franchise, Laura Belloso, as well as Laura Fernandez Espeso and Javier Pons from The Mediapro Studio, and Ignacio Corrales and Sonia Martinez from Atresmedia Studios, who will lead the scriptwriting team. The new production will begin shooting in the first quarter of 2020 in northern Spain.

The original series is currently available on Amazon Prime Video.

“It is undoubtedly with tremendous pride that we announce today a production of this size in Spain,” said Ricardo Cabornero, head of content at Amazon Prime Video Spain. “The international success of El Internado (The Boarding School) a decade ago continues to captivate thousands of fans today on Amazon Prime Video, and we are sure that this new version of the series will be a meeting point for all, as well as conquering new audiences.”

El Internado (The Boarding School) was the precursor in Spain of the current great successes of the television series,” commented Espeso, corporate and television director of The Mediapro Studio. “It broke molds in terms of production and distribution, amassed a huge fan base and launched a new generation of actors, many of whom are the stars of today. The launch of this new series, led by Laura Belloso and most of the original scriptwriters, revitalizes the phenomenon in a moment of excellence for drama production in our country, with the challenge of reaching and conquering global audiences.”

“For Atresmedia, the return of El Internado (The Boarding School) is excellent news because it demonstrates our ability to create successful brands in drama and a job well done over many years. Velvet, Money Heist, Locked Up and, now, The Boarding School have begun a new stage in platforms after their success on Antena 3,” said Martínez, editorial director for Atresmedia Studios. “You have to be very proud of this. As producers of El Internado: Las Cumbres, we are challenged to live up to the quality and success achieved by El Internado (The Boarding School) in its previous stage. Also, working for Amazon Prime Video—with whom we have more projects at Atresmedia Studios—is always a luxury. We are excited that El Internado: Las Cumbres will have a global reach with Amazon.”
