ZDF Studios to Debut Ku’damm 77 at MIPCOM

ZDF Studios’ Ku’damm 77, the latest installment of the Ku’damm franchise created and written by showrunner Annette Hess (The Weissensee Saga, The German House), is to make its world premiere at MIPCOM on October 14.

“The Ku’damm collection has truly resonated around the world,” said Lucy Smith, director of MIPCOM Cannes and MIPJunior. “Its authentic, universal and compelling storytelling has struck a chord with audiences, and we are thrilled that the international television community will get the chance to catch the first look in Cannes of its much-anticipated ’70s era.”

Ku’damm 77 follows the Ku’damm 56, Ku’damm 59 and Ku’damm 63 series, which have found ratings success in Germany and in over 30 countries worldwide. Sonja Gerhardt was nominated for an International Emmy Award for her role in Ku’damm 56.

The historical drama, produced by UFA Fiction and directed by Maurice Hübner (Kitz, Family Braun), depicts a family through different decades at the Galant dance school on Kurfürstendamm.

The latest three-part installment picks up in the divided Berlin of the 1970s. In 1977, the apartment of the dance school accommodates three generations: sisters Monika and Helga, their almost-adult daughters Dorli and Friederike and their mother and grandmother Caterina. Only Eva, the third sister, is still “abroad,” as her stay in prison is described.

The returning ensemble cast includes Gerhardt, Maria Ehrich, Carlotta Bähre, Marie Louise Albertine Becker, Claudia Michelsen and Emilia Schüle. They are joined by new members Carlotta Bähre, Marie Louise Albertine Becker, Massiamy Diaby, Florian Stetter and Aziz Dyab, among others.

“The selection of Ku’damm 77 for a World Premiere Screening in Cannes proves the importance of German drama series in this top-class international arena,” said Dr. Markus Schäfer, president and CEO of ZDF Studios. “ZDF Studios is proud of this appealing addition to its drama catalog, and we are confident that this program will enjoy the same success with worldwide audiences as previous Ku’damm editions.”

Ku’damm 77 will debut on October 14 at 6 p.m. in the Grand Auditorium of the Palais des Festivals. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the showrunner, director, producer and members of the cast.
