Marimar Telenovela Lands Adaptation in Africa

Aby Media, an independent production company based in Abidjan and Los Angeles, has signed a deal to adapt the TelevisaUnivision telenovela Marimar for African audiences.

First aired in 1994, Marimar tells the story of a young woman from humble beginnings who overcomes betrayal and hardships to reclaim her dignity. It covers themes such as resilience, social mobility, self-determination and female empowerment. In Africa, it ranked among the most-watched foreign programs broadcast on the continent.

The African adaptation is slated to enter development in late Q3 of 2025.

Marimar is more than a telenovela; it is a universal symbol of hope and triumph over adversity,” said Kimberley Azria, managing director of Aby Media. “To adapt it today for African audiences is to revive a shared emotional legacy while offering a new interpretation rooted in the continent’s contemporary realities. This initiative reinforces our commitment to forging strong cultural and creative bridges between Africa’s rich narrative traditions and the global audiovisual landscape.”
