TORONTO: Donald Sutherland is serving as producer and screenwriter for Pirate's Passage, an upcoming animated movie that he is also set to star in.

Based on a successful adventure novel, Pirate's Passage focuses on a 12-year-old boy who is dealing with the death of his father. It takes place in Nova Scotia during the early 1950s. Additional members of the voice cast include Gage Munroe, Carrie-Anne Moss, Kim Coates, Roy Moehner, Rossif Sutherland, Colm Feore, Megan Follows, Paul Gross, Gordon Pinsent and Terry Haig.

Sutherland's Martin's River Ink has begun production on Pirate's Passage, which will premiere on CBC Television. The film is being globally distributed by TANDEM Communications, excluding Canada.

"Pirate's Passage is a thrillingly exhilarating adventure, a glorious coming-of-age story, rich in both imagination and history, in perception and truth," said Sutherland. "I couldn't put the book down. It resonated with the clearest image of the man inside every boy's being that I could imagine. It was life writ true and I knew Jim and Captain Johnson's marvelous journey had to be seen on screen."
