CBC Unveils 2014-15 Highlights

TORONTO: There are 12 new prime-time shows coming to Canada's CBC for the 2014-15 season, including dramas such as The Honourable Woman.

In the fall, CBC welcomes Strange Empire, a Western whose heroes are women, to its lineup. Set for the winter 2015 lineup is Camp X, an emotionally driven character drama set in the world of WWII espionage. Pirate's Passage is a new animated TV movie, based on William Gilkerson's critically acclaimed novel. The Book of Negroes, a six-part miniseries based on author Lawrence Hill's award-winning book of the same name, premieres in winter 2015. Additional dramas set for CBC include The Honourable Woman, starring Maggie Gyllenhaal, and the psychological thriller Secrets and Lies, a six-part miniseries.

CBC Selects is a collection of some of the best programs from public broadcasters around the world. Titles for this season include the political thriller Janet King.

There are two new comedies coming to CBC as well: Schitt's Creek, co-created by Eugene Levy and Dan Levy, and Fool Canada, a hidden-camera series.

In the way of factual, CBC has lined up Canada's Smartest Person, a one-hour unscripted series that seeks to uncover a new definition of smart. The show launches in the fall. New to CBC for the winter is Of All Places, which takes viewers into a quirky small town in Canada. Balletlujah is a film that celebrates k.d. lang, following the creation of a ballet based on her work.

Among the returning series for the CBC lineup are Dragons' Den, Mr .D, Murdoch Mysteries and Republic of Doyle.

“I'm really impressed with the level of creativity brought to the new shows we're rolling out next season—we’re trying different ideas in all of our content areas,” said Heather Conway, the executive VP of CBC English services. “I’m also optimistic about where CBC is headed, and excited about our prospects of what I believe can make for a compelling future.”
