NHK World TV Expands Slate

TOKYO: Japanese pubcaster NHK is making some major changes to its international English-language service, which reaches more than 270 million homes across the globe, including adding new shows about Japanese films and Kabuki.

As of April, NHK World TV will increase the number of regular series it airs from 34 to 43, with about 70 percent focused on Japan. NHK World TV says close to 80 percent will be original programs by the channel. The expanded lineup will include new shows like Kabuki Kool with Kabuki performer Somegoro Ichikawa; J-Flicks, about Japanese movies; Japanology Plus, hosted by Peter Barakan; Side by Side, focused on Japan’s international assistance activities; and Asia Music Network.

NHK World TV will also introduce a new segment from New York in its news coverage focused on the economy and business headlines.
