TLC to Premiere Off the Rez

SILVER SPRING: The documentary Off the Rez, which debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival this week, is making its way to TLC on May 14 for a 9 p.m. premiere.

From director Jonathan Hock and executive producers Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos, Off the Rez spotlights Shoni Schimmel, a Umatilla Indian and one of the best high school basketball players in the country. The doc follows Schimmel as she pursues her dream of being the first from her tribe to get a college basketball scholarship. Her and her mother, who is also her coach, battle together to redeem generations of struggle for their family and their people.

"It’s been a honor working with Shoni and her family to tell this story," said Mark Consuelos, who also narrates the film. "Their journey in Off the Rez exemplifies the American dream, showing how the human spirit can overcome any challenge through hard work and persistence. Shoni’s talent is remarkable, and her family’s bond makes Off the Rez a fantastic fit for TLC."
