LOS ANGELES: Following on a successful debut earlier this month, the new Showtime drama The Borgias has secured a second season.

The series delivered the best ratings for a new Showtime drama in seven years, attracting 3.71 million viewers across multiple platforms. Already, season-to-date, The Borgias is tracking ahead of The Tudors‘ fourth installment, the highest rated season ever. Ten new episodes for The Borgias will go into production this summer, with a debut set for 2012. The first season continues to air Sundays at 10 p.m. on Showtime through May 22.

"The Borgias has become Sunday night appointment viewing for a broad swath of our subscribers," said David Nevins, the president of entertainment at Showtime Networks. "Neil Jordan’s cleverly crafted tale of a 15th century papal family has proven quickly addictive. It’s a tribute to his incredible skills as an auteur and to the extraordinary cast led by Jeremy Irons that this show fits so seamlessly into our lineup of quality shows."
